Formulation of the problem. In teaching discrete mathematics to higher education students, mastery of graph algorithms plays a crucial role. This article addresses the problem of improving the methodology for teaching Kruskal’s algorithm through computer modeling and cognitive visualization in the context of the digitalization of higher education. The relevance of the topic stems from current requirements for training highly qualified graduates of degree programs in Secondary Education (Informatics) and Mathematics, as well as in Information Technology, whose professional activities involve modeling complex abstract structures. This creates a need to enhance the effectiveness of teaching graph algorithms through modern digital technologies.Materials and methods. To address this issue, an analysis of scientific and methodological literature on discrete mathematics was conducted, and the experience of Ukrainian and foreign educators in teaching students in higher education was synthesized. The research uses publicly available digital tools for computer modeling of the minimum spanning tree construction process using Kruskal’s algorithm, as well as online services for its cognitive visualization.Results. To demonstrate computer modeling, cognitive visualization, and the methodological features of teaching Kruskal’s algorithm, an example is provided, and an adapted approach to learning it using spreadsheet applications is proposed. The approach uses color-coding for graph vertices as a visual guide for edge selection and minimum spanning tree construction. This makes it possible to identify the connected components of the graph and avoid errors associated with cycle formation. Using an example illustrating the algorithm, it is shown that simultaneously marking objects in the adjacency matrix and on the graphical representation improves understanding of the logic of combining disjoint sets and the principle of transitivity of connections.Conclusions. The study substantiated that computer modeling and step-by-step cognitive visualization of Kruskal’s algorithm are a methodologically appropriate means of supporting systematic and algorithmic thinking among higher education students, as they require learners to consciously analyze each structural change in the graph. The proposed methodological approach enhances the clarity and manageability of studying graph algorithms and can be used in discrete mathematics courses in the context of the digitalization of education.
