The purpose of the article is to summarise the main stages of the formation and development of archaeological research of the Zaporizhzhya Sich, to identify their methodological approaches and key scientific achievements, and to outline the contribution of individual researchers to the formation of modern ideas about the material culture of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks. The methodological basis of the article is the historiographical method for analysing scientific works devoted to the study of the heritage of the Zaporizhzhia Cossacks, as well as the chronological method, which made it possible to determine the sequence of the main stages of the study of the Sich. A comparative-analytical method was used to compare the positions of different archaeological schools and researchers, as well as a source-based approach, which provided a critical analysis of the literature, archival materials and publications of archaeological reports used. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the generalisation of the results achieved in the archaeological study of the Zaporizhzhia Sich and in the identification of aspects that remain insufficiently researched in contemporary historiography. Conclusions. Thus, the analysis of the historiography of archaeological studies of the Zaporizhzhia Sich allows us to trace their gradual formation – from the first descriptive mentions to the formation of a coherent scientific tradition. The initial period, covering the 18th and early 19th centuries, was marked mainly by attempts to understand the phenomenon of the Sich at the level of literary and documentary references. It was then that the first systematic information about the location of Cossack centres appeared, which created the basis for further research. The second phase, which lasted from the 1880s to World War II, was the stage of the emergence of archaeological science about Zaporizhzhia. Despite the limited scope and unsystematic nature of the excavations, it was during this period that, thanks to the work of researchers such as D.I. Yavornytsky, the archaeology of the Sich gained a scientific foundation and became an integral part of historical studies. In the post-war decades, from approximately the 1950s to the mid-1980s, a period of intensive and more systematic fieldwork began. Rescue expeditions, prompted by the large-scale construction of hydroelectric power stations, made it possible to significantly expand the source base. It was then, thanks to the work of F.B. Kopylov, R.O. Yura and other researchers, that a number of new monuments were discovered and the location of individual Sich settlements was clarified. The next stage, covering the second half of the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, was marked by an intensification of research and a growing interest in the preservation of historical heritage. An important contribution at this time was made by A.O. Kozlovsky, V.E. Ilyinsky, and D.Ya. Telegin, whose work on Khortytsia, Baida Island, and the Kamyanska and Oleshky Sich significantly enriched our understanding of the material culture of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. The current stage, which has lasted from the mid-1990s to the present day, is characterised by a shift in emphasis towards analytical research, museum and conservation projects, and the synthesis of the results of previous archaeological campaigns. At the same time, the events of 2023, when the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant opened up previously flooded territories, sparked a new wave of interest in the Sich and created the conditions for the resumption of field research. Thus, archaeological science about the Zaporizhzhia Sich has undergone a complex path of development – from isolated observations to interdisciplinary comprehensive study. Its evolution reflects not only the growth of scientific culture, but also the deep desire of Ukrainian society to comprehend and preserve the material evidence of the heroic past of the Cossacks.
