The article highlights the organizational and methodological features of teaching swimming to children aged 9‐12 years. Emphasis is placed on the importance of using exercises for mastering water in the process of initial training. The health‐improving effect of swimming on the human body, in particular, the children's body, has been revealed. The main mistakes that parents make when teaching children to swim independently in natural water bodies are indicated. The role and importance of preparatory exercises for mastering water are substantiated. Methodical recommendations have been developed for parents regarding the use of special exercises for the initial teaching of swimming to children at home and in natural water bodies. Swimming is significantly different from other types of sports and motor activity due to its health‐improving effects associated with the specifics of the water environment and the performance of locomotion in it. Water plays the role of a universal exerciser, which creates conditions for a harmonious load of all muscle groups, promotes the health of the cardiovascular, nervous, and respiratory systems, and exerts a corrective effect. A wide range of health benefits, as well as the practical value of swimming, encourage many to master swimming skills. However, at the initial stage of training, there are important methodological features of mastering swimming skills, related to preparatory exercises for mastering the water, ignorance of which leads to mistakes. Preparatory exercises give children the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the properties of water, coordinate their movements in it, exhale into the water and hold their breath during immersion, perform sliding correctly, feel more confident in the water, which determinesthe effectiveness and success of the educational process.
